Twelve distinct artistic views on self-rediscovery
Bibimbop is a traditional Korean dish that is appreciated around the world, served in a bowl of various sautéed and seasoned vegetables, mixed with rice, and topped with a distinct spicy sauce. The different flavors of individual ingredients, when complemented with the strong binding taste of the sauce, are transformed into a dish that is greater than the sum of its parts.
The exhibition features twelve Korean artists currently based in the United States, working in various forms such as illustration, industrial design, graphic design, and fashion design. Living far from one's cultural roots is the common denominator of these individuals -- each work demonstrates the artist's unique point of view formed through the process of redefining themselves in a new environment.
Dongyun Lee illustrates the liberating nature of self-transformation, while an androgynous collection created by Min Lee invites you to obscure and shift one's identity. Bosung Kim's kinetic chandelier allows dynamic moods to be manifested in a given space, not unlike Sanghoon Kim’s room divider that addresses the phenomenon of light in changing time and perspective. E Roon Kang's installation offsets our belief in the exponential virtue of digital media and Keywon Chung's work transforms a bodily action into a virtual action via gestural interface. Yeju Choi plays with viewer's subjectivity in act of seeing through her book and posters, while Sohin Hwang and Jaekyung Jung experiment with the (re)arrangement of socio-technologically accepted norms through an artistic research platform.
A message from this show is that personal transformations enable the artists to navigate the virtual and physical space more freely and consciously. Mixing these distinctive ingredients of varied artistic views and topping them with an intense process of self-rediscovery resulted in an original exhibition to be held in February called "Bibimbop—Unexpected Transformations."

"Bibimbop—Unexpected Transformations"는 현재 미국에서 활동중인 12명의 젊은 한국인 아티스트와 디자이너의 작업을 전시한다. 새로운 문화와의 접점에서 한국이라는 배경으로부터 분리된 이들은 문화의 상대성과 보편성을 끊임없이 경험하며 스스로의 정체성을 재구성 해왔다. 이 전시에서는 이러한 과정과 그 결과물을 일러스트레이션, 제품디자인, 시각디자인, 패션디자인 등의 형태로 공유한다.
이동윤의 일러스트레이션 시리즈 "Eternal Flow"는 이러한 자의식 변화과정의 자유로움을 묘사하고 있으며, 이민영은 입는 사람이 정체성을 스스로 정 의할 수 있도록 디자인한 의상을 소개한다. 김보성은 단조로운 장소를 다양한 분위기로 변화시킬 수 있는 키네틱 샹들리에를, 김상훈은 시간과 공간에 따라 변하는 빛의 속성을 드러내는 가구를 선보인다. 강이룬의 설치작업은 디지털미디어의 가능성에 대한 열광과 기대에 질문을 제기하며, 정기원은 탠저블 인터페이스를 통해 물리적 행위를 가상의 공간으로 옮겨놓는다. 최예주는 책과 포스터를 매개로 바라보는 행위의 주관성을 탐구하고, 황소인과 정재경은 예술연구 플랫폼을 중심으로 기술사회적 규범을 재구성하는 실험을 한다.
여러가지 신선한 재료의 맛이 고추장과 참기름에 버무려지며 새로운 차원의 맛을 제공하는 비빔밥처럼, 12인 12색의 작업을 정체성의 재구성이라는 공통의 주제로 버무려 뉴욕 한복판에서 담아내는 이번 전시는 한국 디자인 진흥원의 후원으로 이루어진다.
